UK Onshore Wind Opportunity

Why Windworks are looking towards the UK market

This month, our team attended the UK Onshore Wind Conference 2025, a pivotal moment for the UK onshore wind sector, which is both exciting and challenging. At the conference, Energy Minister Michael Shanks MP reaffirmed the government’s commitment to net-zero emissions, underscoring the central role of onshore wind in this mission.

The UK aims to double its onshore wind capacity to 27–29 GW by 2030, up from around 16 GW today, supported by £40–50 billion in recent investments. Following the lifting of the de facto ban on onshore wind in England in July 2024, further planning reforms are expected soon, paving the way for accelerated development.

Despite this momentum, the sector faces significant grid and infrastructure challenges, creating regional imbalances—particularly in Scotland. Projections indicate minimal new projects beyond 2030 due to grid constraints, potentially sidelining many developments. In the first half of 2025, Scottish wind farms were paid to curtail 37% of their electricity output, totaling 4 TWh—enough to power all Scottish households for six months.

The pressing need for grid investment means rising energy bills in the UK to fund this investment. For example, one UK farm business that we spoke to anticipates a £10,000 increase in their grid charges in April 2026, primarily due to the Transmission Network Use of System (TNUoS) tariff, which will double that month and is forecast to grow by more than 10% annually through 2030–31.

These financial pressures are driving UK businesses to explore on-site energy solutions to better manage costs and reduce bills. While commercial and industrial solar has already seen strong growth, there is now a significant opportunity for efficient, community-friendly, commercial-scale wind turbines.

With excellent wind conditions, supportive policies, and high energy costs expected to continue, the UK is one of the most dynamic and promising markets for Windworks.
